HOLY SOCIETY OF KING DAVID

King David.  King who ushered in the Golden Age of the nation of Israel.  The Sweet Psalmist of Israel.  Anointed musician.  Gifted administrator who organized worship at the Tabernacle of God.  A man after God’s own heart.

This is the man of God after whom the Holy Society of King David has been named.  For over thirty years, this Society has actively taken an important role in the restoration of the Arts in the Church.  It currently involves over 150 adults and children in the following ministries:  Choir (Adult and Children), Orchestra, Dance (Adult and Children: Kinder and Junior), Mime (Adult and Children), Banner (Adult and Children), and Production.  In most of these, it is interesting to see two generations of ministers working side by side as this Society has been around for over three decades.

King David ministers are regularly involved in all of the Masses of the Cathedral, especially on Sundays when all the Adult groups minister in full force.  Every third Sunday of the month, the youth and children join the adults in ministry for what we now call as Youth Sunday.  To usher in the new Church year, the Society annually presents the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah during the 1st week of Advent. The Children’s ministries take centerstage during the Christmas season, especially during the Feast of the Holy Innocents.  Holy Week up to Easter Sunday is one of the busiest times for the Society as they minister each day, especially on Good Friday when the Fourteen Stations of the Cross and the Seven Last Words are reenacted.

The Seasons of Easter and Ordinary Time are when Worship Concerts (here or abroad) or Training Seminars/Workshops are held. One of its priority projects is the constant production of new music for the Cathedral.  The Songs of Life, its most recent CD, was produced in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Cathedral in 2009.  For most of 2011, the Society has also been preparing for another major project, the all-original SACRED: THE MUSICAL slated for August of 2012.

Praise the Lord in song!

The Cathedral of the King Choir is a mixed choir of adults from the young age of 13 and older.  The basic requirement is to be part of the Grand Chorale, which rehearses once a week.  Those who desire to make a higher level of involvement join what we call our Choral Worship Team.  For this, they will have to go through an intensive Level One training.  Rehearsal/training schedule is as follows:

Grand Chorale rehearsal        :  Tuesdays, 7-9 pm, at the King David office.

Worship Team rehearsal       :  Wednesdays, 8-9 pm, at the Sanctuary

Level One training              :  current batch still in training; opening for  the next batch is on the 2nd half of 2012

Finally, the Society is blessed to have a Production Group that supports it in all of its endeavors.  Its members assist in stage management, the production of props, sets and costumes, and in the execution of stage and lighting designs.  It has a big responsibility on its shoulders as we prepare for SACRED:  THE MUSICAL next year.  They are looking for people who can volunteer their services in the above-mentioned areas.  A special need is for people who are interested to be trained in handling the sound requirements of productions or special events. Contact person is Tinny Ho c/o Fr. Nelson Tantoco at the King David Office.
